No, it's not like Black History month in for the "White" minorities in Japan, it is the Yang of Valentine's Day. In Japan, on Feb. 14th, women give presents, usually chocolate, to men. On March 14th, if you got presents or candy from a girl (or twenty) and you like that girl(s), then you give her(them) a return gift(s) on March 14th.
Remembering everyone you recieved candy from can be a chore, epsecially if you are a popular (and handsome) teacher in a school filled with impressionable girls. My fellow teachers told me that it is actually illegal for a teacher to receive candy from students, but I was lucky. My contract ended on February 10th, so technically I wasn't a teacher on February 14th!!! I left an empty bag for candy on my desk, but alas, without my presense the kids forgot to leave anything in my bag. Oh well, saved me some money yesterday, and it maybe saved me a few ounces around my waist.
Now, before you click on this link, care to guess what "BLACK DAY" is?
(Hint: it is more practiced in Korea than in Japan, and it doesn't have anything to do with Afros or power outages!)
Ta ta,
Erich
